The video that I am going to be doing my final reflection on is called, "Physical therapy is boring -- play a game instead" I did this TED Talk because I have an interest in physical therapy and I think that it would be cool if you were to integrate games in physical therapy.
This Talk is done by a man named Cosmin Mihaiu. He starts of this video by telling us the experience that him and is his mother went through when they needed to go through physical therapy. He said that the therapy was boring and painful. His mother had developed something known as frozen shoulder; she could not do the simple things that she once was able to do such as putting on clothes or cutting a cake. I think that it is great that he wants to help people in a fun way. Next, he starts to talk about new and more fun ways to go through physical therapy that would potentially make it less tedious. Him and a group of friends started to invent a game that works as physical therapy, but in a fun way. They used a Kinect device and made a customizable game so that the physical therapist could change it to match the type of movement or exercise necessary for the patient to recover the way that they are supposed to. I think that this is a great idea to get the patients more involved in there therapy. I liked this video because it shows how you can make even the most tedious and painful things fun. Thank you all for reading my blog!

For my third TED Talk, I am doing Optical Illusions Show How We See. Beau Lotto starts off his TED Talk with a game. He asks his audience to tell him which of the three chosen colors are the same. They looked the same with the different backgrounds but when he put the dots on the other side, it showed that only the grey dot was the same.
He then talks about how colors enable us to see things that we would not have seen before. He showed a greyscale jungle image and then asked his audience if they were able to see the predator. Not a single person was able to say that they could. But when he shifted the image into color, it was clear that there was a predator. This is interesting because now I know just how important color is to our vision. Beau then goes on to talk about how we are only experience the world through our senses. This is very interesting to me because it triggered something in my brain and I thought about how Helen Keller. I thought that if she was missing two of her senses, how was she able to experience life. I now know that it was because of her other senses, that she was able to live and experience living. Next, he tells us that even bumblebees see illusions and that they can train the bees to go to certain color flowers and when they change the flowers around, they will still go to the flowers that were blue before. This part confused me a little but I was still intrigued. Finally, he tells his audience that the brain cannot see the way the world is, but that the brain actually sees the world in a way that was useful in the past. That is why we are able to read things like, "I c n rea th s." because our brain puts in the letters that are useful. This Talk made me very interested in optical illusions and how our brain percieves only the useful world. Thank you for reading! My next TED Talk is Why Do We Sleep. I chose this Talk because I wanted to know why we do one of my favorite things in the world. This Talk is done by a circadian neuroscientist named Russell Foster. (A circadian neuroscientist is a person who studies the sleep cycles of the brain.)
Foster starts off his talk by telling us that if you are an average person, 36% of your life is spent sleeping. Therefore if you live to be 90, then you have slept 32 years at that point. I think that this is phenomenal! The amount of time you are sleeping is more than a 3rd of your life. Foster goes on and tells us the history of peoples feelings toward sleep. He says that people during Elizabethan times would cherish sleep and Shakespeare wrote about how precious sleep is. But after about 400 years Thomas Edison said that sleep is a waste of time. This shows how the thoughts and feelings about sleep change as time moves on. After this he talks about the brain and the reactions that go on to get us to sleep. He says that if we don't get enough sleep, then our body starts to degenerate and some of our most basic functions such as thinking start to be affected. We should all get sleep because it is important to our daily lives. Scientists have not come to a consensus about why we sleep. But Russell Foster tells us three of the ideas they have. The three ideas on why we sleep are: restoration, energy conservation, and brain function. The first one is about restoring our energy and making us feel better. The second is about sleeping to save calories he does not agree with this one. The third idea is about how the brain processes help memory and brain function. Teenagers are supposed to get at least nine hours of sleep a night but the average teenager gets around 5 hours of sleep. Resulting in sleep depravation which is very bad for our bodies and can cause grades and productivity levels to decrease. When you lack sleep you have poor memory, stress, poor creativity, increased impulsiveness, poor judgement, etc. so get as much sleep as you can. This is why we all sleep. I really enjoyed this video because it helped me realize why I am always so annoyed with everyone. I need more sleep to be the person that I want to be. Thank you for reading. TED Talk Reflection #1
The first TED video that I am doing is called, "Breaking the Language Barrier." I did this TED Talk because I want to learn new languages and cultures of different countries around the world. This has to do with what matters to me because it is my dream to travel around the world. The person who did this talk is Timothy Doner. He had gained a lot of attention from the media, but not the type of attention that he wanted. He thought that the media would want to spread his story and diffuse the idea that language learning was a great thing. He did not know that the only thing they were interested in was views. Timothy said that the interviewers would tell him to say things to the audience like,"Say hello to our audience in Muslim." and, "Tell the audience that you speak 23 languages in German." This showed him that the media wanted him for views and not to spread his story. He says that knowing a language is more than knowing a few words from a dictionary. Knowing a language is being able to live within the country that speaks the language with no barriers in between the person and the native speakers of that country. Learning a new language is learning a new culture. One of my favorite statements that he says is something like words and phrases sometimes do not translate directly, sounds much better when he says it. One of the points he wants to get across is that language and culture are closely tied together. This was a very inspirational video for me because I want to learn languages and be able to speak them fluently. I want to connect with the people of these foreign countries and learn their culture. I hope to inspire people to open themselves up to new ideas about culture and foreign languages. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNmf-G81Irs Hello, my name is Eric Bater. I am a ninth grade student at West Orange High School. I am going to be doing a project for my English 1 class so that I can answer the question,"What matters to me?" If there could be only one thing that I was passionate about, it would be to fulfill my dream of travelling the world and learning the languages and cultures of many different places around the world. I hope to learn that it is possible to have all of these amazing adventures and find myself while doing it. :-)
